Spring 2013 Alumni Updates

Our Kappa Sig Brothers … where are they today?

Larry H. Mack ’58 ([email protected]
Many good memories of living in the house from 1955 to 1958. I spent most of my free time playing bridge. On Saturday nights, we played from when the women had to go to their dorms until the spudnuts arrived Sunday morning. Retired to Pinehurst, NC, in 1995 and spend four hours on one of our golf courses four days a week when in town and the weather permits.

I graduated 1961 and my senior year was the first year we moved into the house on Beaver Avenue. It was built around the old house we lived in, so I was fortunate to see entire construction.  The new house was built with significant financial help from Al Rockwell, founder of Rockwell Industries.  I was an officer in the house at the time and met with Al on several occasions when he flew into State College on his private plane to supervise the proceedings. It was a great time for Kappa Sig and I was glad to be a part of it.  Sad to see the house now abandoned when I last returned.  So many memories.

I am involved with Prestige Building Company, LLC and Prestige Building Corporations out of Marlton, N.J.  We provide construction services for ground up and renovation projects primarily to the affordable housing community. We operate in multiple states and I act as the qualifying person on most of our licenses. That equates to travel time to various places, currently California, Louisiana, Kansas, Arizona, New Jersey, Delaware, and St. Thomas USVI. My new toy is a 1964 T Bird. Elaine and I are still living in Pottstown, and our son Brian is in the DC metro area.

After college and graduating in 68’, I joined the Navy, specifically to avoid going to Vietnam, and was fortunate enough to explore many cities in Europe near the Mediterranean. After that, I moved to Raleigh, for five years where I met my future and present wife Elizabeth. We moved to Dallas and had three “Yellow Roses of Texas”.  We stayed there for ten years and really enjoyed it.  Then we moved to Vienna, VA outside Washington, DC and have been here for 23 years.  All three girls have married and we have three grandchildren, with many more expected.  All this time, I have worked as a landscape architect and have loved it. I’ve had the pleasure of working on nearly half the buildings on the National Mall and even the White House, as well as memorials, monuments, and a large number of embassies around the world. I am currently working on the Eisenhower Memorial.  It has been quite a ride.  I am now semi-retired, working a 20-hour week mostly at home.  I am the Technical Director for Design for the Alexandria, VA office of AECOM, the largest A-E firm in the country.

Currently, I am living in Orlando, Fla. and have a wonderful wife and three beautiful children. We visit Disney World a lot and continue to follow Penn State football and other happenings there. I have spent the past 13 years as Software QA manager at a few different companies. Currently, I hold that position with Intelity Solutions, Inc., a mobile guest services company that provides hotels with technology for a more luxurious and personalized stay. It is headed by another Penn State alum!

My wife CeCe and I welcomed Macie Margaret Coppins to the family on October 23rd, pictured here with her 5 year old brother Cash.  We still reside in Tampa, and have had the good fortune of adding Brother Brian Roakes ‘94 back into the Gulf Coast lifestyle.  Hope all is well with those I know, and I continue to pray for and support the undergraduates who are doing great work in the name of Alpha Delta.

I’ve been working at Guardian for 20 years this year. I have had many different roles along the way. Currently, I manage a development team in the Retirement division. – Additional responses in possible newsletter doc.

My wife and I are expecting our second child in April 2013.  Due to my recent promotion, my family and I will be relocating to Chicago, IL in July 2013.  True to my Kappa Sigma nickname, I, Vitas, and my family enjoy playing tennis. I especially enjoyed spending a week last summer in the Outer Banks with the families of Brothers Darby Neidig ‘93, Jason Striker ‘96, Tom Tatem ‘98, Kevin Hacker ‘98, Matt Dippold ‘98 and Matt Weisberg ‘97.  I also congratulate Brother (and fellow Memphian) Don Bradford ‘94 on his recent promotion to CEO of Ensafe Incorporated.

So many of my favorite memories come from traveling with the pledges and brothers to other campuses to meet other Kappa Sigs. The bonds that form on Bolts are very strong and bring together brothers that may otherwise not interact as much. Ironically, I was accidentally left behind on my own pledge bolt and did not get to make those initial memories as a pledge. What I mostly miss about State College was the lack of adult responsibilities.

I have finished my MBA, got married, had a son and I am a senior field engineer and project manager.

Nick A. Mendez ’02 ([email protected])  I have moved to Houston, Texas and bought my first house with my wife of a year and a half, Eva.  I am still working with the same company, Aramark that I started with right after graduating.

Since graduating from Penn State in 2009, I lived in Pittsburgh, Pa. and worked as a Corporate Buyer for Dick’s Sporting Goods, more specifically, golf equipment. In October 2012, I moved back to my hometown Erie, Pa. and started working for my father’s company, Great Lakes Automation Services, Inc. I am a Sales Account Manager for the company.  I just purchased my first home and I am anxious for the upcoming football season. As a founding father of the Alpha-Delta Chapter at Penn State, I am very happy for the guys to finally get a house. Starting the chapter back up and not having a house was very difficult and at times inconvenient, so it’s great to finally establish a location on campus.
