No House, No Problem: Actives Uphold Kappa Sig Pride

Thanks to Colby Delaney ’14 for participating in this Q&A.

Why did you join Kappa Sig?
I joined Kappa Sig because I felt lost here at Penn State my freshman year and wanted to get involved in something that would be a constructive and meaningful use of my time. When I met the brothers of Kappa Sig I knew it was a good fit for me and would provide me with many great memories and experiences.

What is your best Kappa Sig memory so far?
My favorite memory so far has been THON 2012, it is such a great thing to experience and for a great cause. We all came together to cheer on our dancers Mike Vough and Mackenzie Neumaier. Our THON child Nick and his family came down to attend and it’s always great to see all the brothers having a good time hanging out with Nick.

How have you become involved in the fraternity?
This semester I was a part of the rush committee, and I am the current pledge educator. I plan on remaining active in the fraternity during my remaining years here as well.

How would your life be different if you never joined Kappa Sig?
If I hadn’t joined Kappa Sig I wouldn’t have made as many close bonds as I have. I also don’t feel that I would have learned all the valuable life lessons that Kappa Sig and the brothers have taught me.

What is your favorite part of the spring semester at Penn State?
Besides THON, I enjoy when the weather gets warm again. When it’s warm outside there is more buzz on campus and it is much easier to stay motivated for finals.

What are your plans and goals for your future?
After graduation I would like to get my MBA and find employment in the supply chain field. Beyond that I am excited for the journey life will take me on.

What other activities are you involved with on campus outside of Kappa Sig?
Outside of Kappa Sig I am in the Blue and White Society and find time to play on both a roller hockey and floor hockey team.

What has been the best part of your Kappa Sig experience so far?
Learning all of the rich Kappa Sigma history, from the beginning in Italy to the Alpha Delta founding in 1869 to the present time. I have always loved learning history, and the fact that it plays such a big part in our fraternity is awesome. Learning all the great history really helps build up a sense of pride in the fraternity and myself.

Have you had any direct experience with your alumni? If so, what was the best part about it?
I have met numerous alumni; last year at the Blue and White game I met many of the recent alumni. It was a good experience to hang out with the guys who had just recently graduated and have found recent success in the business world. Also, this year during homecoming I had the pleasure of meeting many of the older Alpha Delta’s. This was another great experience to hear these guys talk about the great times and friendships they had while attending Penn State. Once again, it was great to hear the alumni talk about the success they have had since leaving Penn State.

Why is it important for alumni to remain connected with the active chapter?
I feel that it is important for the alumni to stay connected with the chapter because all the actives love hearing stories about what Alpha Delta used to be like. Seeing and hearing from the alumni reminds us all that we are not involved in this great fraternity for our four short years here at Penn State, but rather for the rest of our lives. Also, alumni connections with the actives encourages the actives to remain involved after they graduate, which can only help the chapter to develop and flourish. The lack of a chapter house doesn’t mean that the actives aren’t willing to meet up with alumni when they are in town. In fact, I encourage all the alumni to reach out to the chapter when they are in town so that they can meet the quality active brothers we have.
