A Recent Grad Reflects on His Alumni Experience

Thank you to Ricardo Ospino ’09 for participating in this Q&A…

Q: Why did you join Kappa Sigma as an undergraduate?
A: It was a chance to be a part of something different – a brotherhood that excelled in all aspects of life. Whether it is academically or socially, Kappa Sig had gentlemen join who were and still are at the top of their game.

Q: What is the funniest memory from your Kappa Sig days?
A: There are enough of these for me to write an entire book!

Q: What is the single fondest memory you have shared or will share with your children and grandchildren?
A: I would talk about canning for Tyler in the Lancaster area in 2009. I was with a bunch of brothers (Jon Orr ’09, Jeff Watson ’09, Ryan Morgan, Rob Del Riego ’11 and Kelsey Britton ’10) who came together for a cause that was greater than our beings. We came together to raise money to defeat childhood cancer.

Q: How do you stay connected with your brothers as an alumnus?
A: I tend to hit up random brothers via text messages once a week or so.

Q: Have you visited Penn State since graduation?
A: My girlfriend was a year younger than me so I frequented Happy Valley quite often before she graduated, but haven’t gone back since. All of the Kappa Sig brothers I was close with have left campus to pursue their professional careers.

Q: What about your membership in Kappa Sig makes you the most proud?
A: I am most proud to have met gentlemen with a lot of ambition. That attitude rubbed off on me the right way.

Q: How would your life be different today if you had never joined Kappa Sig?
A: It would be a lot more boring.

Q: If you could go back and relive one moment from you Kappa Sig years, what would it be and why?
A: Canning, I absolutely loved it!

Q: What is your advice for future generations of brothers?
A: Don’t get discouraged by the little things, just keep on doing you. In the few years of my professional life, I have heard too many rumors and news about job losses, unemployment and the like that it can get hard to keep focus. Even still, I have to continue to work hard and show all of those around me that I am a valuable asset.

Q: Where has life taken you since graduation?
A: I currently live in Philadelphia and work in an Oil Refinery.

Q: Who do you stay connected with in your alumni years?
A: I stay in touch with Steve Zoni ’10, Steve Bilo ’09, Josh Velez ’09 and Jesse Kozacki from time to time.

Q: Why would you encourage other brothers to engage with Kappa Sig in their alumni years?
A: To continue having the same relationships and friendships from our college years.

Q: What is the best thing about your alumni experience?
A: Old friendships keep on growing.
