How Has Kappa Sig Influenced You?

Thank you to our alumni members who recently responded to let us know how Kappa Sigma has influenced their lives. Here’s what a few brothers had to say about their time in the fraternity:

William S. Vitori ’73: “The fraternity gave me leadership qualities and social skills that enabled me to handle the skills required in my teaching profession.” William added, “My roommate in the fraternity, Bill Murdoch (Turtle) ’73, was the best man in one of my weddings and was an usher in another. Don Carretta (Hooter) ’75, is my oldest daughter’s godfather.”

“Kappa Sigma was a perfect fit for me. Many of the brothers in the house were from southwestern, Pa. In fact, two of them were from my high school. The older brothers at Kappa Sig: Timmy Bonowitz, Ron Stiteler (Hooch) ’71, Tim Weis ’71, ‘Buzzy,’ Frank G. ’71, Calvin Lewis ’71, Bob Hannigan, ‘Derf’ and Duane (Smooth) Carlson ’73 made you feel welcome, like you were part of something special. The brothers in my pledge class and some of the ‘younger guys’ are still some of my best friends today.”

David Payne ’81: “I learned a lot about leadership, diversity and maturity while I was at Kappa Sigma. I was forced to take responsibility for myself and was accountable to my brothers. I held different positions of responsibility and frankly executed those responsibilities less effectively than I would have liked. But that was part of the learning experience. I was very immature at the time and the many mistakes I made helped me learn and grow.” David added, “I selected Kappa Sigma because the brothers were diverse. Some fraternities had the prep look, some the grunge look, some were engineers, some were business majors; Kappa Sigma was all of those things.”

William W. Barr ’50: “Through brother Tom Hill ’48, I met my wife after a Penn State-Pitt football game. 56 years later and two kids and three grandkids, it was still the luckiest moment in my life.” William added, “My daughter was a Chi Omega and my son was a TKE.”
