Remember When?

Thanks to “Crazy Joe” Kelty ’86 for submitting the following story.

I was fortunate enough to attend PSU in 1982 when our football season ended with a National Championship Win! Early in the season we figured that if we could beat Nebraska (a PSU home game) we might go all the way. To show my support for Joe Paterno and the team, I wore my standard white sheet Toga to the game (like I always did). During the game some of my buddies convinced me to jump onto the playing field, and run around. I agreed under one condition – – that when I was ready to get off the field, they would help pull me back into the stands – – over the wall, which was about 9 feet high. Turns out I needed that help, because a bunch of security conscious people were chasing me. Anyhow – – since Nebraska was one of the top seeded teams that year, the game at Beaver Stadium was televised on CBS. I remember that detail because, my father called me the following day to ask if it was me he saw on TV that weekend, running on the field. Later I realized that a whole lot of people recognized me as the guy in the Toga. My Kappa Sigma brothers gave me a nickname that year, “Crazy Joe”. Perhaps the best part of this story is that many brothers told me about how Joe Paterno’s weekly cable TV program had a video clip during the Show Intro, and part of the video was of me in my Toga at that Nebraska game.
