Remember When?

Thanks to Bill Vitori ’73 for sharing this great memory from his fraternity days.

He writes, “There are so many good times. Brother Ab and “Borrowed Time”, The Leroy Taylor Explosion (“Take off your shirts!!”), and the social with Brother Bone and “Watchtower”. However, I would have to say that my best memory would have to be on Dec. 4, 1971. At the end of the Fall Term in 1970, we were all about celebrating Christmas at the Kappa Sig house, singing Christmas carols and having some good brotherly fun. (We would sit around the living room while the old man ‘Timmy Bonawitz’ would tell us youngsters about the Christmases of long ago.) But we never took our Christmas celebration outside of the house. Well at the end of the Fall Term in 1971, the Kappa Sigs took Christmas celebrations to a new level. We decided that, “why just stay in the house caroling when we had an entire campus to entertain?” We started down fraternity row and before you knew it, our numbers had grown dramatically. Then, all of a sudden, one of our brothers had this idea that we should carol outside of JoePa’s house. It sounded like a great idea! Why not! We figured we would go up and entertain Joe and Sue. Our numbers grew as we caroled through campus on our way to the Paternos’. When we arrived at Joe’s house, we didn’t know what to expect. Now you have to realize that Penn State had just lost to Tennessee earlier that day (31-11), but none of us thought about that and some of us had actually forgotten about it! After a few verses of ‘Jingle Bells’, Joe turned on the lights and instead of calling campus security, he invited us in. (By the way, Sue and Joe were entertaining friends at the time!) There we were, standing in the living room of Joe and Sue Paterno, singing Christmas carols. Of course, we then started singing PSU favorites – Hail to the Lion, Fight on State, and the Alma Mater. That was one of the biggest thrills of my Kappa Sig days. Standing by Joe Pa singing the Alma Mater. The caroling at JoePa’s tradition continued on in the following years, but the first Kappa Sig Christmas caroling at the Paternos’ was on Dec. 4, 1971. (I’m not sure if anyone has pictures of the event; I had some, but my ex-wives destroyed most of my memorabilia over the years – including my edition of ‘Bologna Docet’).”
